Corporate social responsibility
The most common business model used and is continually adapted by business owners and representatives is the concept of “customers first”. In this kind of business perspective, the company’s priority is the client – adapting the culture of the customer being the on the right side of every situation. Although the idea has been tested and proven by many generations already, the new culture of corporate social responsibility seem to have still found its way into companies all over the world especially in the BPO industry.
Through CSR, BPO companies focus more on the need not only of their client but also of their employees and the community. According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), CSR is defined as the continuing commitment by [the] business to contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the community and society at large.” It is the heart of the business – more than reaching its goals to gain and grow customers and earn profit.
Benefits of CSR
Corporate social responsibility has now become a global trend. Reported by Telus International, here are some benefits CSR can offer.
In popular BPO destinations like India and the Philippines, competition is fierce especially when it comes to getting the top agents for the business. Also, tough competition result to added pressure to agents and a lot of overtime work. Because of this, employee attrition rate continue to increase. However, some big BPO companies have stated that CSR programs counteract this concern. With the effort of the company to organize programs that involve in engaging the employees or communities, makes the workforce feel more satisfied about work and their well-being.
CSR programs is the company’s way of giving back to the community. But along with the excitement and the break from a typical day at work, organizing community-based programs are a lot of work and may require extra work. It can also be a venue for some employees to explore other potential and develop talents and skills beyond what they do inside the office. Such programs can also expose hidden leadership skills among agents that can also be utilized back in the office.
Spiderman once said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” As big companies sprout in every corner and with every company undertaking every effort to promote CSR, real social change is more likely possible. Not to mention that it is the best and most effective form of good publicity for the company.
Becoming the legacy
Years from now, CSR will not be an unconventional idea anymore. A day will come when all companies, BPO and non-BPO will abide to the good cause behind each CSR programs implemented in their respective offices. Partnered with the right will and the right intentions, the real impact of CSR is within our reach.
