Iloilo’s next big thing
An 18-story SM City BPO Twin Tower is prepared to be constructed in Iloilo. The P1.7 billion-worth BPO tower will be built along Benigno Aquino Ave., across SM City Mall and beside the Injap Tower in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
January 27, 2016 when SM City mall manager, Gilbert Domingo, requested for a city council endorsement required for Philippines Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) endorsement. After months of processing, a consultative meeting with stakeholders of the SM City BPO Twin Tower was conducted on March 7. Finally, on March 8, the project was successfully endorsed by the Iloilo City Council and now ready for construction.
Based on the initial plan, the BPO tower’s lower ground floor will be a terminal for public transport. The 2nd to 5th floor are for SM clients’ parking areas while the 6th to the 18th floor are for a BPO office and other leasing offices.
The project is a big boost to the city.
-Candice Magdalene Tupas, Chair of the SP Committee on Trade, Commerce & Industry
SM City mall management requested only 20 percent of the total floor area to be declared as PEZA accredited. The tower is targeted to finish construction of its first six floors in November 2017.
What could this mean for Iloilo City?
For many years now, Iloilo City has been home to thousands of callcenter agents who are either office-based or home-based. According to an article by Tara Yap in the Daily Guardian, the industry has provided employment in the city for almost half a decade already. With the rise of new buildings in Megaworld, Ayala Technohub and this coming SM City BPO Twin Tower, a handful more companies will definitely bring in business here in Iloilo City. Why are they coming here in Iloilo, you may ask?
We have a high literacy rate at 92.8% and an average of 39,000 graduates per year.
-Joeven Tansi, Deputy Executive Director of Iloilo Federation for Information Technology (IFIT)
According to Tansi, BPO locators are highly attracted to Iloilo City because of the pool of rich human resource.
Iloilo is home of many state universities and colleges which ensures us of quality education, hence, quality graduates. With more graduates and more BPO companies here in the city, unemployment will eventually decrease and the standard of living will increase.
The SM City BPO Twin Tower will be a new home for fresh graduates, long-time callcenter agents or young and even retired professionals to foster the spirit of service in business outsourcing. The tower will be a grand spot marking a legacy for the BPO industry. To be standing along on the most visited areas in Iloilo, it will surely be a sight to see.
